In recent times, I decided to take a month-long hiatus from social media in order to reconnect with myself and the world around me. The US election and the constant bombardment of information left me feeling increasingly disengaged and falling into a mental health spiral.
My Struggles with Mental Health:
I have battled anxiety and depression for a significant part of my life. Some days I emerge victorious, while on others, these issues get the better of me. Lately, I had been feeling stronger, but a series of unfortunate events left me depleted and struggling to regain my footing.
The Unconditional Support of My Furry Friends:
During this challenging period, I found solace in the unwavering support of my two canine companions, Willow and Merlin. They didn’t judge or pity me; instead, they offered their presence and affection. Willow, my future service dog, stayed by my side when I needed her most, while Merlin always found a way to make me laugh.
The Therapeutic Benefits of Pets:
I’ve come to believe that dogs, or pets in general, can be immensely helpful in managing depression and anxiety. They provide a reason to face the day and can help us momentarily forget our troubles, eventually allowing us to truly enjoy life again.
The Growing Movement Towards Nature and Animals for Mental Health:
More and more people are seeking solace in nature and the animal kingdom to combat mental health challenges. As our society has drifted away from our natural surroundings, we’ve witnessed a rise in mental illness diagnoses, particularly depression and anxiety. Thankfully, there’s a growing awareness of the benefits of connecting with nature and our pets for our overall well-being.
For those who continue to fight their mental health battles, I applaud your strength and resilience. We each have our unique ways of coping, and it’s crucial to find what works best for us.
