Welcoming a rescue dog into your home can be an emotional experience. But, it’s important to remember that your dog’s ability to live in the present is unmatched. Here’s how to move forward together and build a strong, healthy relationship.
The Power of the Present
Dogs are amazing at living moment to moment, while still remembering essential things like mealtime routines. They tend to only focus on their past when their humans pity them due to previous trauma, or when their humans refuse to discipline them out of compassion. To help your dog, it’s crucial to put their past behind you and concentrate on creating a safe and structured environment.
Willow’s Legacy
Take, for example, my Doberman, Willow. She was a puppy mill-breeding dog, and she had already been through several homes before finding her way to me. If I had let her past dictate our relationship or had failed to provide structure or discipline, Willow wouldn’t have made the incredible progress that she did.
Although Willow never quite got over her fear of hissing noises and thunder, she overcame her severe anxiety around men. With the assistance of her canine companion, Merlin, and plenty of treats, Willow transformed from a timid dog to a one that actively sought affection from people.
Willow’s progress did not occur out of pity, but instead resulted from my commitment to keeping her safe and providing consistent guidance.
Build a Better Future Together
If you’ve rescued a dog with a difficult past, the greatest gift you can give them is a sense of stability. Provide your dog with clear rules, structure and guidance to teach and foster growth. By focusing on the present and creating a safe environment, you’ll empower your furry friend to live their best life.
